The Vienna Christmas markets 2025

At the start of this year’s Advent season, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) emphasized on Thursday that comprehensive security measures will be in place at the Christmas markets: “The mandate to all state police departments is clear: people should be able to celebrate a safe and enjoyable Advent.” Uniformed and plainclothes officers, as well as specialized task forces, will be on duty.

No concrete terrorist threat

The Directorate for State Security and Intelligence (DSN) is continuously analyzing the situation in Austria and internationally. According to the Ministry of the Interior, there are currently no indications of concrete terrorist threats in connection with Advent markets or similar events. Nevertheless, the general threat level posed by Islamist-motivated actors remains high in a pan-European comparison. Security measures are therefore regularly adjusted. Implementation is carried out in close coordination with local authorities and event organizers.

Pickpockets are particularly active at Christmas markets

In addition to possible extremist threats, property crime is also coming into focus. Advent is considered the peak season for pickpockets. Perpetrators take advantage of the festive atmosphere, especially in crowded areas, at market stalls, or in queues.

Trick thefts—such as bumping into people, spilling drinks, or distracting them with cards or flyers—also increase during this period. The police advise people to be vigilant and take simple precautions.

Prevention tips from the police:

  • Carry valuables close to your body, ideally in lockable inside pockets.
  • Always keep handbags and backpacks completely closed.
  • Be particularly vigilant in crowds.
  • Be wary of distractions from strangers.
  • Carry only a small amount of cash—pay cashless wherever possible.
  • In an emergency, notify the police immediately and block your cards (bank/SIM).
